Poconos Winter Resorts - No End to Family Fun

After the autumn season passes and the air becomes crisp and cool before giving way to new fallen snow, people begin to feel the longing to get out and start enjoying what a winter life has to offer. Outdoor enthusiasts and lovers of winter sports often head to the Poconos of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Part of the Allegheny Plateau and bordered by Lake Wallenpaupack to the north the Pocono Mountains cover a four county area – Monroe, Pike, Wayne, and Carbon Counties. The sylvan hills and valleys are increasingly popular as a winter vacation spot.

What kind of winter recreation do the Poconos have to offer?

Skiing: The Poconos became home to the first commercial ski area in the state back in 1946. From beginner slopes to more challenging double back diamonds for ski veterans, the Poconos have what every ski enthusiast is looking for.

Alpine Mountain, located in Analomink, Pennsylvania is a picturesque setting for a family ski vacation with a total of twenty-one trails to choose from.

Back in 1972 Jack Frost Mountain became the ideal place for the Jack Frost/ Boulder Ski Area. Jack Frost Mountain has a summit of two thousand feet, a base elevation of fourteen hundred feet, and a vertical drop of six hundred feet. Twenty-one different slopes offer ample opportunities for family fun.

At seventeen hundred feet Big Boulder boasts a progressive terrain with fifteen slopes to choose from.

The Blue Mountain Ski Area offers thirty-seven slopes for skiers of all skill levels.

Camelback Mountain Resortis an extremely popular spot for beginners to learn how to ski. It provides a family friendly atmosphere for kids of all ages to enjoy.

With a vertical drop of seven hundred feet and twenty-three slopes and trails to choose from, Shawnee Mountain Ski Area is a premier getaway for family fun.

Skytop Lodge provides enjoyment for the whole family on four gentle slopes with a vertical drop of two hundred and ninety-five feet. Visitors can also choose cross-country skiing on one of the many trails of the fifty-five hundred acre resort.

Snow Tubing: What could be more exhilarating than jumping on a specially made inner-tube for a ride down a thousand foot mountain chute? Some of the ski-resorts also offer families a chance to enjoy the growing winter sport of snow-tubing.

Alpine Mountain, Big Boulder Ski Area, Blue Mountain, Camelback Mountain, Jack Frost Mountain, and Shawnee Mountain offer snow-tubing as well as skiing. From morning until night the Fernwood Fun Center offers snow-tubing familyfun beginning in December all the way through March.

Snowshoeing: On sparkling winter days visitors to the Poconos can strap on a pair of snowshoes to walk the winter woodland trails and enjoy the lustrous beauty of the mountains.
